Artist
Hi, I'm Mary the creator and artist behind Muds By Mare. I often get asked how I came to work with clay and the answer isn't really a straight line. I have always been a creative person, but never felt settled or totally satisfied with whatever I was working on. It wasn't until my husband and I moved away from friends, family and work that I was faced with a sort of emptiness that needed to be filled. For some reason, I knew that I wanted to fill that emptiness with pottery.
I got my first wheel in 2021 and without access to a kiln or studio, I simply threw pieces over and over without ever finishing one. This gave me lots of practice and helped me develop my love for the wheel. When we moved into our home in 2022 I was so ready to really get serious about pottery. I started my instagram account, @MudsbyMare and you guys really showed up for me! Showcasing my work through social media has been another art form in and of itself and it's been such a fun journey building Muds by Mare into what it is today!
Creating in my studio is one of the places where I feel most true to myself. I can't help but be drawn to clay in any form or state, it is natural and stunning. The slow methodical process of throwing, with its many stages, gives me a sense of peace and is a reminder to slow down and appreciate things that take time. Clay calms and simultaneously excites me.
